Chapter 22: I may have the evil stepmother character setting
The eldest brother was about to continue speaking, and Xia Qingshan's face instantly darkened like black ink. Suddenly, he raised his hand and slapped the table next to him.
'Crash!'
The table immediately collapsed.
Lin Yue was shocked.
Even in her dreams she could never imagine that her own man would be so decisive and manly.
Without any hesitation, he acted directly.
Although the table was a bit old, it was still made of solid wood. With this slap, the perfectly good table unexpectedly collapsed.
Not only was Lin Yue shocked, but even the others in the room were all astonished.
In the minds of the eldest and second brothers, their third brother had always been mischievous since he was a child, often causing trouble everywhere. Later, he was sent away by their deceased father to learn skills in Henan.
But, they didn't know what he had learned. Finally returning after ten years, he was sent to work in the coal mine.
Therefore, everyone didn't really have a good understanding of the third brother.
Seeing everyone silent, Xia Qingshan continued coldly, “Leave a way out for people, so we can meet again with good feelings in the future.”
“I, Xia Qingshan, have no other shortcomings except for being protective. Regardless of who Lin Yue was before, she is now my woman. Besides me, no one can bully her.” Xia Qingshan didn’t hold back, “Even if she did something wrong, it's my responsibility as her husband to educate her. It's not for others to criticise.”
Everyone looked at each other, unable to say a word.
Meanwhile, Lin Yue felt extremely complicated. She had to admit that, at that moment, she was touched.
The eldest brother sighed and threw his pipe on the ground, stepping on the bud to get the fire out, “Alright, Third Brother, since it's come to this, what do you suggest we do about this?”
Xia Qingshan turned to Lin Yue, “Are you willing to work in the brigade to earn points?”
Lin Yue shook her head, “It's not that I don't want to, but I don't know how to do anything, and they all make fun of me.”
After some contemplation, Xia Qingshan turned to Xia Guodong, “Big brother, could you please go to the brigade with me to clarify that the previous grain did not end up in our hands.”
“Ah, this... if this is brought up...” Xia Guodong seemed a bit confused.
“What does it matter? Whoever took it should admit it,” Xia Qingshan replied casually.
“You…” Xia Guodong's face turned pale and dark.
“What's wrong? Since we've come to this point, is there anything else you don't understand?” Xia Qingshan asked coldly.
“No, okay, let's go back,” Xia Guodong gritted his teeth.
Feeling a bit embarrassed, he muttered at the end, “You're so arrogant now, but we're all in the same village. Let's see if you'll come begging to us in the future.”
Xia Qingshan glanced indifferently at him, “Big brother, you don't need to worry about that.”
On the other hand, the second brother had been silent all along.
The grain was taken by the eldest brother, and they hadn't eaten a single grain of it. As long as they got the money for the IOU back, that would be enough.
Xia Qingshan stood up and looked at Lin Yue, “You can go back first. Big brother and I will go to the brigade.”
Lin Yue obediently agreed and got up to leave.
After leaving the eldest brother's house, Lin Yue suddenly felt much brighter in her heart.
If she didn't go to work in the brigade, she wouldn't earn any points, and there would be no grain allocation. It seemed that she would have to work hard to earn money in the future.
When Xia Qingshan returned home, it was already dark outside, and she didn't know what he had said to the brigade.
Anyway, as soon as he entered the door, he said to Lin Yue, "You don't have to go to the brigade to work in the future, but we won't receive our share of grain either," Xia Qingshan said.
Lin Yue shrugged, "Okay, but can I at least plant some vegetables in the yard?"
Xia Qingshan nodded, "Sure, but I won't be much help. I only have one day off a month."
Lin Yue waved her hand confidently, "It's okay, I can handle it myself. If needed, there's always winter."
Xia Qingshan frowned, "But what about the children?"
"Boys need to be raised in poverty; training should start from a young age," Lin Yue retorted assertively, “Don't forget, I am a stepmother. If I don't let my stepson work, how can I fulfil the role of the wicked stepmother?"
Xia Qingshan's brow furrowed even tighter. He didn't understand what "role" meant exactly, but he got the gist of the sentence.
After some contemplation, he spoke softly, "I'll find some time to plant when I come back in a few days."
Lin Yue's eyes flickered but she remained silent.
She thought to herself that this guy seemed to care a lot about his son. Should she take this opportunity to ask him for more living expenses?
She thought about it countless times but ultimately gave up.
Lin Yue was a very strong-willed woman. Even when she was working as a migrant worker in her previous life, she never asked her family or friends for money – even when she was barely able to afford a bowl of porridge every day.
Such a stubborn woman, even now, she couldn't bring herself to ask her husband for living expenses.
"Forget it, I'll figure it out on my own," Lin Yue thought to herself.
Soon, night had arrived and it was time to sleep. There were two rooms in the house. Previously, Grandma had slept with the children in one room on the kang. The other room was usually left for Xia Qingshan.
Lin Yue also slept with the children when she came. It was easier to take care of things at night.
Today, she wanted to sleep with the children again, but...
"Mom, this side is all wet, it hasn't dried yet. The remaining space is only enough for me and my brother," Xiu Er stood on one side of the kang, smiling.
Lin Yue felt frustrated. She had just realised that the roof had leaked during the rain last night, making most of the kang wet, and she hadn't been able to dry it with a fire yet.
"It's okay, Mom's healthy. Just one night should be fine," Lin Yue said casually as she went to grab the quilt.
"No, Grandma said you can't sleep on a wet kang bed, you'll get sick. What if Mom gets sick?" Xiu Er sensibly shook her head, grabbed the quilt, jumped off the kang, and ran to the next room. She put down the quilt, then came back to pull Lin Yue.
"Mom, brother and I will sleep in this room. You can go sleep in that room," Xiu Er said, pulling Lin Yue while giggling.
Lin Yue felt embarrassed and really didn't want to go, but it was at this time that Dong Tian had lugged the small chamber pot into the room.
"Brother, help me bring Mom over. This side of the kang bed is wet, and Mom has nowhere to sleep." Xiu Er’s sweet voice rang out.
Dong Tian placed the bucket down and sneered, "Why should I bother? Whether she gets rheumatism or back pain, it's not our concern."
Rolling her eyes, Lin Yue said, "I'll go myself."
Glancing sideways at Dong Tian and seeing the child’s deliberate raise of his chin, Lin Yue was even more irritated and went to the next room angrily.
Xiu Er looked back at her brother in confusion, then looked at the closed door, and looked at Dong Tian in doubt.
"Brother, do you really care about Mom, or do you really hate Mom?" Xiu Er asked.
Dong Tian grunted displeasedly, "Who cares about her? It's better if she's dead." After saying this, he hugged the quilt and laid down on the dry part of the kang bed, turning his back to Xiu Er to sleep.
Xiu Er scratched her head, feeling that the boy's thoughts are hard to understand.
T/L: Dong Tian’s so dishonest >//<
