Chapter Two
After fiercely speaking, the boy turned on his heel and ran away again.
Xia Kun jumped up, staring at the yellow stuff all over his body. He was so angry that he saw red. He used a handkerchief hastily wiping the yellow stuff away, whilst muttering to Lin Yue "You’re being too much. This child is so uneducated. Sister Yue, what are you doing about him? You have to bring him up properly! If he was my son, I would have broken his legs a long time ago."
"Come on, let's not stay any longer. Bring Xiu'er over and we'll go back." The crippled man standing on the other side wasn’t particularly bothered by the shit and piss strewn all over him. He wrapped himself up in dirty clothes and rubbed at his nose with his sleeves.
Lin Yue pinched her nose and frowned, "You must have made a mistake. I didn't say I would marry Xiu Er into your family. She’s only eight years old, how can she get married?"
"What did you say?" Xia Kun’s face immediately turned black.
"Hey sister, you’ve already received the betrothal gift. Don’t tell me you’re actually going back on your promise."
Lin Yue coldly snorted, "Just based on these five catties of grain coupons as a dowry? Don’t forget that back then we didn't agree on when to marry. Xiu Er is still young, wait until she’s eighteen years old before she can marry. "
"Good for nothing!" Xia Kun furiously yelled out.
"She is only eight years old now. If you only marry her off to us at the age of eighteen, then why did we give you the betrothal gift now? Sister, you are clearly trying to play afool with us!" Xia Kun grasped at her waist tightly, not caring about the disgusting smell on her body.
Her previously pleasant look instantaneously into a vicious one.
However, Linyue wasn’t one who could be easily bullied either. She got off the kang and glared angrily at Xia Kun, placing her hands on her hips.
“Calling you "sister-in-law" is just showing you respect, but do you really think I, Linyue, am so easy to push around? I've just married into this family, and you're already trying to talk me into marrying my daughter off to a cripple!"
"This cripple is quite good, why don't you just let your daughter marry him? After all, your daughter is turning nine years old this year, isn't the timing just right?
"As for the bethrothal gifts, aren’t they just food stamps? I’ll just give them back to you.“
Having said that, Lin Yue retrieved a few food stamps from under her pillow and tossed them at Xia Kun.
"Now, please leave. You are not welcome in my home."
"What- You- Hello- Lin Yue!” Xia Kun spluttered out incoherently, “Do you really think that I, Xia Kun, am so easy to bully? You dared to play with me like this when you only just got married in Xiajia Village? Let's see what will happen in the end!" Xia Kun turned on her heel and left.
"Sister-in-law, my wife," the lame man shouted hurriedly when he saw this.
"What are you shouting for? Don’t you see her regretting and calling the marriage off? What else can you even take from her?" Xia Kun roared angrily.
"What change of heart? I've already paid the betrothal gifts. She accepted them herself back then. Now that she says she's not doing it, she’s really not doing it? Where is that girl? I'm taking her away right now." The cripple's face twisted into a grimace, acting tough.
He's the dominant figure in the entire Xia family village production team, so why would he be afraid of a wife who came from outside?
Xia Kun was slightly taken aback at the words, realizing it made sense. Xiu Er’s father was often away from home, and even before that, it had always been Xiu Er's grandmother who took care of them.
A few days ago, their grandmother passed away. Worried that there would be no one to take care of the two children before her death, she had no choice but to drag someone in, bringing in a wife who was both dark and fat, and blind in one eye.
Throughout all of it, the father of the two children never bothered to come and take a look.
So, as long as she subdued Lin Yue, the cripple could take Xiu Er away, and no one would be the wiser.
As for Xiu Er’s father, it was said that he and a few other scoundrels from the neighboring village were mining coal in the mines. He only came back once every year or two, and even by that time the marriage would’ve been long done with. What else could he do?
With these thoughts in mind, Xia Kun secretly signaled the cripple with a wink. She then turned and approached Lin Yue.
"Sister, this time you're being unreasonable. How could you go back on your word like this?" Xia Kun said, reaching out to grab Lin Yue's arm, with a look as if she was ready to have a serious conversation with her.
