Chapter 4
Snapping out of his daze, Dong Tian stared at Lin Yue in confusion before bolting out the door.
The enraged cripple threw his hands up in defeat. "Alright, alright, you win this round. But this isn't over, Lin Yue. We'll see about this!" With a final menacing glare, he limped away.
Lin Yue didn't try to stop him. Xia Dongtian, who had overheard the threat, stormed back to the doorway, his face hardening into a glare.
Seeing the crippled man leave, Xia Kun could only follow along reluctantly. At the entrance, unable to contain herself, she spat vehemently at Lin Yue.
"Pei, you stupid blind bear! Just wait and see!"
Lin Yue was speechless for a moment. Although she knew Xia Kun was cursing at her, the phrase "blind bear" seemed oddly fitting.
With the troublemakers gone, Lin Yue dropped the pole and, panting heavily, walked over to check on Xiu Er.
As she crouched down, Xiu Er quickly grew alarmed. Hurriedly, she turned and ran away. Dong Tian quickly pulled his sister to stand behind him.
"Don't think that just because you drove away the cripple, I'll trust you," Dong Tian warned angrily, his small face flushed with anger.
"They were brought here by you in the first place," Dong Tian continued angrily, his cheeks puffing up as he glared at her, having no intention of letting her off the hook.
Lin Yue's outstretched hand stiffened for a moment, and with a dry throat, she uttered out a single word, "Sorry."
Dong Tian kept his glare fixed on her, his anger simmering. Lin Yue sighed, stood up, and retreated back inside.
At this moment, Lin Yue's memories and the memories of the body had completely merged. The owner of this body was also named Lin Yue, and this was the Xiajia Village in Fengyun City in 1980, where she had just become a newlywed bride.
However, she had no husband. The only difference from her previous life was that she came here to be a stepmother, who had immediately inherited a son and a daughter.
In Lin Yue's memory, she had never seen her husband. It had been her mother who arranged her marriage, a desperate trade for five pounds of food stamps, a pound of meat stamps, and five yuan – a bride price to settle her brother's debts.
As for the other side, due to their grandmother’s sudden passing and absent father, their grandmother simply married her son off to Lin Yue for her to look after to look after the children, and registered their marriage for him. Lin Yue, for her part, had simply packed her bags and arrived.
The day after she arrived, the children's grandmother passed. After the funeral, the original owner of this body sold Xiu Er away in exchange for five pounds of food stamps.
Lin Yue couldn't understand it. This woman was not only ugly, but her thoughts were also despicable.
It's no wonder she met such a fate. As it turned out, Dong Tian played a part in her demise. Enraged by his sister's sudden marriage, he'd struck the sleeping Lin Yue on the head.
And so, the previous Lin Yue – large, dark-skinned, and blind in one eye – perished. In her place, the future Lin Yue had taken over, her consciousness inhabiting this new body.
Realizing it was getting late, Lin Yue walked around the kitchen.
They were really poor. There was only a bowl of cornmeal in the entire kitchen, and there was almost no rice left. Forget about any oil and vegetables.
She gathered the remaining cornmeal and mixed it into a thick paste.
As it cooked, she ventured outside to pick and wash some wild Po Po Ding greens, adding them to the pot.
The thick paste cooked quickly, and Lin Yue served each child a large bowl, inviting them to eat.
"Dong Tian," she began tentatively, seeing him relish his meal, "where'd all the food go? I seem to remember the production team distributing supplies recently."
"Hmph, it's all because of you," Dong Tian mumbled around a mouthful of food, his face stormy.
"What does it have to do with me?" Lin Yue asked puzzledly.
"Grandma gave away the distributed food to marry you, and she also borrowed five yuan from Uncle Er," Dong Tian said angrily.
T/N: Hopefully their relationship slowly improves… Lin Yue isn’t the person she used to be anymore
