Chapter 6: Reborn in the 1980s, I became the Stepmother of Two Children

 Chapter 6

Xia Dongtian glared menacingly at Lin Yue and said, "Let me tell you, I've already called Dad. He'll be back tomorrow, and then we'll kick you out. Don't even think about harming my sister, you hear me?"

With that, he grabbed Xiu Er's hand and stormed out.

Lin Yue was speechless and her mind was all jumbled up with thoughts. When Xia Dongtian had entered earlier, she had carefully examined him, finding nothing abnormal about his body. But Xiu Er...

As the sky darkened, the family's poverty became more apparent, especially when all of the remaining porridge had been fed to the children earlier. She mulled over everything and finally understood why the original owner of this body had decided to marry Xiu Er off in exchange for five pounds of grain coupons.

That was because Xiu Er was sick.

According to Lin Yue's memories, her eyes had a special ability - she could tell if someone was sick with just one glance. On her first day of marriage, she had seen it - a tumour in Xiu Er’s body. It was dark and possibly cancerous.

This family was already impoverished, so even if they wanted treatment, there was no way. But the cripple was different. As he had broke his foot at the construction site a few years ago, he was able to receive compensation of a few hundred yuan. With his parents recently deceased, they had also left behind some savings for him.

If Xiu Er married him, although he was a bit older, at least the cripple could provide her with some medical treatment. It was a chance at life.

The thought left Lin Yue's heart aching.

But marrying Xiu Er was definitely not an option. Wasn't it just about the cost of surgery - she refused to believe that she would not be able to settle it.

However, right now, the most important thing was how to survive.

After a night of silence, the next morning, just as dawn broke, Lin Yue went to call Xia Dongtian and Xiu Er.

"What do you want, ugly woman? Planning to marry off my sister again?" Xia Dongtian squinted, his voice low and menacing.

Lin Yue rolled her eyes. "This time I'm not marrying your sister. I'll marry you off instead. Are you up for it?"

"You're talking nonsense. I'm a man, and only women can be married off. There's no such thing as a man getting married off," this little guy seemed to know quite a bit.

Before Lin Yue could respond, Xiu Er tugged at her brother's sleeve and timidly said, "Brother, men can be married into the family too. Like Uncle Shuanzi, he's a married-in son-in-law, but he's always getting scolded by his wife."

Xia Dongtian was momentarily stunned, but unexpectedly replied, "If it's marrying into the family, then so be it. Who do you think I'm afraid of? Just don't have any ideas about my sister."

Lin Yue was surprised by his response and couldn't help but give him another glance before scoffing and turning away. "With your small stature, who would want you as a son-in-law anyway? Hurry up, get dressed, and bring your sister out. We're going to get something to eat."

With that, she turned and stepped out.

Lin Yue had an idea when she saw the rats yesterday. Right now, the most important thing was food for the next few days, and rats were undoubtedly the most abundant source of stored food.

She decided to seize whatever food she could, after all she didn't have to take any responsibility for it.

So, Lin Yue took off her eyepatch, uncovering her previously covered eye and began searching for the shadow of a rat everywhere.

Xiu Er looked at her from the side. "Mom, your eyes aren't blind anymore?"

Xia Dongtian frowned and tugged at his sister. "Don't talk nonsense. It's rude to talk about blindness. You're a girl, so mind your words. Besides, how many times have I told you? You shouldn't call her 'mom.' She doesn't deserve it."

Xiu Er pouted and stuck out her tongue. "But Grandma told us to call her 'mom' before she died."

"Grandma didn't ask her to sell you though," Xia Dongtian retorted angrily.

Lin Yue's hand twitched slightly. "My eyes weren't originally blind, just a bit sensitive to light. But it's okay, I still need to get some sunlight."

T/L: Okay, I guess they're growing closer....?
