Chapter 8
"We're going inside first," Xia Dongtian said as he pulled his sister and headed towards the house.
"Wait, nephew, where are you going? How come you don't greet your uncle when you see him? What's that you're holding?" Xia Dongtian's second uncle, Xia Guoliang, spoke up.
"N-nothing," Xia Dongtian tightened his grip on the bag in his hand and quickly disappeared into the house.
"Hey, don't run away! What's in the bag? Why are you being so secretive?" Xia Guoliang shouted after him.
Lin Yue stepped in front of him, blocking his path. "Second Uncle, It's just some cornmeal and a few wild vegetables I bought. Nothing worth looking at."
Xia Guoliang regained his senses and looked at Lin Yue with disdain. "Is it with the money my mother left you before she died?"
Lin Yue snorted. "After your mother passed away, you all searched the entire house. How come you're still not satisfied?"
Xia Guoliang was momentarily speechless. The woman beside him chimed in, eager to speak her mind.
"Lin Yue, that's not fair of you to say. Who knows if the old lady left something for you privately?"
"Speaking of which, that old lady always favored the youngest son. Out of the three brothers, she only had eyes for the youngest."
"Let's not even mention other things. Originally, all three brothers had children. But the old lady paid no attention to us and the eldest brother. She devoted all her attention to the youngest's children."
"In the past, it was understandable because the youngest was busy working in the coal mine and didn't have time to take care of his children. But now that the coal mine is closed, why hasn't he come back? And who knows where he found those two illegitimate children. We don't even know who their mother is."
"The old lady was determined to take care of those children herself for three years. And before she died, she took money from us to help the youngest son marry a wife. Can you believe how biased she was?"
"And that's not all. The youngest son doesn't even have land. The old lady used to cook for the commune and received a few work points just like us. But in the end, she divided the grain equally among us. Ultimately, it's like they've been sucking our blood."
The second daughter-in-law spoke with sharp words that left people unable to refute.
Lin Yue furrowed her brows but remained silent.
The second daughter-in-law continued, "We're not trying to force you into anything. After the old lady passed away, whatever she left behind should have been divided among us three brothers. But for so many years, those two children were taken care of by the old lady. So when it comes to dividing the property, you should consider giving a little leeway to us, right, the youngest son's family?"
"I've said it before, grandmother didn't leave anything behind," Lin Yue said firmly, looking at them.
"How is it possible she left nothing? If she didn't leave anything, where did you get the rice and flour from? There's at least ten kilograms of it," the second daughter-in-law insisted.
Lin Yue raised an eyebrow. "Are you intentionally trying to push us to the brink? The old lady's funeral has just ended, and you're already tearing the house apart. Wouldn't you guys know best whether there's money in the house or not?"
"That's strange. We did search the house, but we didn't find anything. Yet, how do you still have money to buy rice and flour?" the second daughter-in-law pressed.
Lin Yue chuckled lightly. "Do you really want to know?"
"Of course, tell us. We have nothing to hide. If this money isn't from the old lady, then did you earn it by selling your body?" the second daughter-in-law said, looking Lin Yue up and down, not forgetting to sneer.
"Only if you change your body with someone else's, then it would be more believable that some other guy would want to sleep with you. Otherwise... Seriously, what kind of blind man would even want to sleep with you?"
Lin Yue frowned. "You shouldn't make baseless accusations."
"Don't tell me it's from your maternal family. I heard that your maternal family, in order to provide gambling funds for your brother, shamelessly asked the old lady for ten dollars. After negotiating for half a day, it was reduced to five kilograms of grain, one kilogram of meat, and five dollars."
